In early August 2009 a UNODC retained expert travelled to Seychelles to determine the readiness of the Seychelles to take on piracy trials given the increase in piracy in the Somali Basin. The Expert recorded the following reports from members of the Bar in Seychelles.

COURT SITTINGS

As previously advised, all Supreme Court sittings in the week beginning 10 June 2013 will be held at Ile du Port.

The Supreme Court will not be sitting in Victoria.

The Magistrate’s Court has not moved and will be sitting in Victoria as normal.

Magistrate’s Court continues to sit in Victoria; Supreme Court and Court of Appeal at Ile du Port

Following the official opening of the new Palais de Justice at Ile du Port on 17 June 2013, as part of the National Day celebrations, the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal have completed the transition to the new building and are no longer sitting in Victoria. The Palais de Justice has ample public parking and is also accessible on the number 39 (Perseverance) SPTC bus route. The hours of service for court hearings and registry and cashier operations are unchanged.

In view of the overwhelming response to the half-day symposium opened on 17 June 2013, it was agreed that the symposium should be adjourned to a future date to allow for further exploration of these fundamental themes.

New Court Building Opens

 

The new judiciary building – the Palais de Justice – at Ile du Port was officially opened on Monday evening in the presence of President James Michel and a host of guests.

 

The new judiciary building houses the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal of the Seychelles and is a US $6 million project funded by the People's Republic of China and built in partnership with the government of Seychelles.
